When I got my first “real” job, the fitted black blazer was one of the first things I bought. Why? Because I felt like a boss when I was wearing it. And, I was convinced that a serious business woman was exactly what other people saw when they looked at me too.
Over the course of my career, I’ve invested in a number of black blazers. You can never have too many, of you ask me. They’re quite possibly one of THE most versatile pieces I own.
I can pair it with anything — ripped boyfriend jeans, a maxi dress, or a pencil skirt — and still look put together, intentional and most importantly, like myself.
I’m not big on telling people what they should and shouldn’t have in their wardrobe. Those annual “must-have” lists make me itch.
But, I’ll make an exception this one time. If you don’t have a black blazer in your closet, you need one.
As proof of how much of a wardrobe staple this simple, but powerful piece is, JCPenney’s latest collaboration with actress Tracee Ellis Ross features a black tuxedo jacket as its signature piece!
If you’re not feeling the fitted style, try an oversized, structured or boyfriend cut — whatever suits you best. Regardless of which style you choose, the black blazer is like a best friend; always there when you need it.
