It’s all about the journey: The best pieces for traveling in style

Traveling is one of the things I enjoy most in life. But there are many aspects of the journey – like the pre-planning plan, packing and confinement to tight spaces – I could seriously do without.

I am meticulous when it comes to travel prep. I think my overly-developed attention to detail is enough to drive even the most passive person to contemplate pulling a knife on me. I take the phrase “I just want to make sure,” to a whole new level.

One seemingly benign, yet terribly worrisome aspect of any trip for me is figuring out what my “going away” outfit will be.  It has to be comfortable and it has to travel well. I don’t want my clothing to inhibit me, nor do I want to look like I’ve been traveling all day. I want to look impossibly fresh when I arrive at my final destination.

That’s why these linen pants were the perfect choice for a recent trip we took to transport our daughter to college. Granted, the trip is only four hours by car, but the “accordion” look isn’t one I typically go for when I travel. Linen is a material that’s made to crease and wrinkle. So, the longer it’s worn, odds are the better it will look.

That was very true of this simple, yet chic black and white combo I chose for the ride. The elastic waistband in the wide leg pants made sitting for long periods a breeze without any discomfort around the waist area. And the sleeveless shirt made the August heat bearable … but only just.  The cutout detail in the back, as well as the high-low hem also took an otherwise unimaginative black shirt to a different level.

Overall, I was really pleased with the way this minimal ensemble turned out and most of all how well it held up. What about you? Any secrets you want to share for traveling in style? Let me know in the comments below.

The story of SisterLadyGirl

The story of SisterLadyGirl

The story of SisterLadyGirl

Maybe you’ve had one of those moments? You know what I’m talking about. The instant when you realize that someone you’ve long admired and look up to thinks you’re pretty cool, too?

Mine came recently when my friend, writing mentor and fellow blogger Carol Cassara reached out to ask if she could do a profile about SisterLadyGirl.

Umm, what? Are you kidding? Of course, I said yes!

Admittedly, when I started my blog a few months ago, I didn’t have much of a plan in place. All I knew was that there never seemed to be a shortage of people who had questions about my hair: “How do you make it curl that way?” “What do you put in it?” “Are there specific products you use?” My goal was to offer content that gave them the answers they wanted in an open and (hopefully) helpful way.

Truthfully, I didn’t think many people would keep reading the blog after a couple months. I mean, how much can you say about hair?! But, the exact opposite happened. The questions I received about my hair began to evolve into questions about my personal style. And, I’ve been diving into my closet ever since, mixing and matching and pulling out some of my “oldies but goodies” to create chic, yet affordable styles that look great on anyone.

I’m glad I didn’t allow my initial anxiety to keep me from writing because the blog eventually caught Carol’s eye and she wrote this absolutely AHH-mazing post about how SisterLadyGirl got its start here: http://carolcassara.com/style-blogs/.

Once you’ve had a chance to check me out, I’d encourage you to visit Carol’s incredibly insightful blog, CarolCassara.com. She offers “daily inspiration for creating our best lives.”

Well, it doesn’t get any better than that, does it? That’s why I follow her and hope you will too.

A little black magic: Leggings are a fashion essential for every woman

A little black magic: Leggings are a fashion essential for every woman

I’m a woman, so it goes without saying that I have the prerogative to change my mind. On more than one occasion, I’ve shared my dislike for leggings with just about anyone who would listen.

Well, I stand corrected. I absolutely love them. They’re incredibly versatile, not to mention comfortable. Pair them with a jacket and some heels for a more sophisticated look. Or, take a more casual approach by throwing on some flats and a shirt.

If that’s not the definition of a staple piece, I don’t know what is!

Check out how I decided to style mine during a recent jaunt around town. Admittedly, it’s taken a little while for me to jump on the leggings bandwagon. Now that I have, I’m really happy about it. What about you? Are leggings a staple in your wardrobe? If so, what’s your favorite way to style them? Tell me about it in the comments below.

5 easy summer outfits to get you through the work week

5 easy summer outfits to get you through the work week

This time of the year is so full of irony. Its summertime, but lately, it’s ALWAYS raining. When it’s not raining, it’s just downright hot! People in the fashion industry are gearing up for the fall. But we regular folk are still trying to make it through the summer!

For me, figuring out an appropriate outfit for work, especially during the summer months, is a process. I find dressing for fall and winter a little simpler. With some creative layering and a few well-placed accessories, I can pretty much rock any look.

But, summer work wear is a bit trickier. For instance, I have to consider what kinds of meetings I’m in and with whom. Will I have to go offsite or stay inside? Will I be on my feet for most of the day or at my desk? And, when the weather isn’t cooperating, it makes planning even more important.

That’s why I spend a few extra minutes each weekend to think through my schedule and what outfits will get me through each day. I’ve put together this small gallery of some of my favorite looks. What do you think? If you have any favorite looks you like to rock at work, tell me about them in the comments below.

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner? How to style one dress for multiple occasions

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner? How to style one dress for multiple occasions

Anyone who’s ever read my blog knows I’m a huge advocate of staple pieces. They’re the foundation that my entire wardrobe is built on.  For many people, the mere mention of a “fashion staple” brings to mind the LBD (little black dress).  And, they’re right. It’s a classic, and in my opinion, no woman should be without one (or maybe two … okay, three, max)!

When I’m considering a staple piece to add to my closet, I always ask myself a couple of questions:

  • Is it versatile? Meaning, can it be styled for numerous occasions?
  • Is it timeless? In 5-10 years from now, will I run the risk of hearing, ‘I remember when people used to wear that’.

Yes, a fashion staple should be dependable. But, one thing it should never be is unimaginative. That’s why this BCBG dress is one of my absolute favorites! It’s comfortable, flowing and most importantly, it’s not boring.

Staple pieces don’t have to be limited to blues, blacks and browns. With a little imagination, most well-crafted pieces will qualify.

What about you? What qualities do you look for in a staple piece? Please, do share in the comments below.

Shoulders above the rest: A “peasantly” chic look

Shoulders above the rest: A “peasantly” chic look

Shoulders above the rest: A “peasantly” chic look

A few weeks ago, I RSVP’d to attend a fashion meet and greet here in Tampa. As I thought about the event, there were two major issues I had to consider: 1) the 4 p.m. start time and 2) the invitation’s instructions to “dress to impress”.

Generally speaking, I have a pretty good idea about what dressing for a networking event should look like. For a morning coffee, I might opt for some neutral toned slacks paired with a button down. It’s simple, yet crisp and transitions to the office well. For lunch, I might consider adding a pop of color to that same outfit by throwing on a jacket or accessorizing it with a pair of statement pumps. During the dinner hour, you can never go wrong with the LBD (Little Black Dress). It’s a classic.

Given that none of these scenarios applied, I started to think that I might have bitten off more than I could chew. What could I wear that was simultaneously fashion forward and appropriate for the specific time of day? I didn’t want to look over or under dressed.

I knew whatever I ended up wearing didn’t currently exist in my closet and I wasn’t interested in spending a lot of money. So on a whim, I decided to stop into Target on my way to the mall. And lo and behold, I snagged this comfy, yet stylish peasant dress for less than $30!

Off the shoulder blouses and dresses are a huge trend this summer. And, to glam things up a bit, I decided to pair it with a hat I picked up for my spring break vacation and a pair of lace up heels.

I think the look turned out “peasantly” perfect.

Make me a deal: What time is the right time to find bargain prices?

Make me a deal: What time is the right time to find bargain prices?

Make me a deal: What time is the right time to find bargain prices?

I’ve never gotten hung up on “in-season” and “post-season” styles. My approach has always been fairly straightforward: If it fits, is stylish and priced just right, I’m probably going to buy it.

On a recent trip to the mall, I found these babies on sale at Shu Shop for less than $30!

I wasn’t necessarily in the market for a pair of summer sandals, but they held true to my criteria: they fit, they were stylish and they were priced just right. So, I bought ‘em!

Did you know mid-summer is an ideal time to find some great deals on apparel at a fraction of the cost you’d normally pay? That’s because during this time of the year, between late June and July, many retailers are starting to gear up for fall.

imageSo, in order to clear space on shelves and make room for seasonal items like back-to-school gear, stores will sell post-season summer items like sandals, shorts and t-shirts at deeply discounted prices.

And, people like me – you know the ones who love a good bargain – benefit.

A quick trick for combining color perfectly … every time

A quick trick for combining color perfectly … every time

A quick trick for combining color perfectly … every time

While it’s true that my favorite color combination is black and white, I will on occasion mix things up a bit by adding a little color. I purchased this skirt thinking that it would look great coupled with some vibrant tones. I was right! I absolutely LOVE the styling for this midi skirt. The red and yellow pieces complement each other without being too overwhelming, which is always a goal of mine when using color.

If I’m being honest, I’m still learning about pattern and color matching and mixing. That’s why I don’t wear a lot of it. But, one of the tricks I use to get my color combos perfect ever time is this:

That’s right! My trusty color wheel has never let me down! One quick glance tells me what the best color combinations are, such as orange and blue or red and green.  Most of the time, though, I use it for suggestion purposes only.  In my world (almost) all rules are meant to be broken. So, I went slightly off the grid when I styled this outfit.

I picked up the yellow no-name clutch from a local boutique a few years back. Unfortunately, it’s no longer in business. But, I still love shopping boutiques and upscale consignment for accessories. You never know what kinds of treasures you’re going to find. In this case, I absolutely got the result I was looking for. What about you? Any color combos that captivate you? Tell me about it in the comments below.

White, the official color of summer

White, the official color of summer

White, the official color of summer

If it isn’t already, I think white should be the official color of summer. It’s cool, clean and crisp. And, it just makes you feel good. At least, that’s how I felt about this dress when I first saw it about five years ago in a local boutique, which sadly has since closed.

I know. It’s not what comes to mind when you think about the typical summer dress. But, that’s what’s so great about it. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before.

Right there, in the middle of the floor, stood this beauty draped proudly on the display mannequin. Of course I asked the shop owner to remove it immediately. I mean, what if someone else were to walk in at that very moment and experience the same sense of awe that I did?!? I couldn’t let that happen!

Needless to say, I walked away that day with a beautiful dress that’s given me lots of beautiful moments in return. What about you? Have you ever had a “love at first sight” moment with a particular piece? Tell me about it in the comments below.
