If you’re anything like me, getting to the gym on a regular basis can be a little … well … tricky. Until I actually lose that final 10 … 20 … okay 30 extra pounds, I have to figure out ways to simply look like I have. And, it’s entirely possible with layering, an easy styling trick that anyone can pull off. Here, I’m wearing a long, sleeveless coat on top of a more form-fitted knit dress. Since my body is larger on the bottom than it is on the top, I always think proportionally, especially when it comes to layering. The loose, flowing shape of the coat versus the closer fit of the dress adds some visual balance. At the same time, it gives me coverage around the hip area, which is another easy trick to make me look slimmer in an instant. Lastly, I chose a palette of related colors to create a more monochrome look, which helps elongate my body and again make me appear leaner. What about you? Do you have any tips and tricks for slenderizing? Tell me in the comments below.
On The Job
This time of the year is so full of irony. Its summertime, but lately, it’s ALWAYS raining. When it’s not raining, it’s just downright hot! People in the fashion industry are gearing up for the fall. But we regular folk are still trying to make it through the summer!
For me, figuring out an appropriate outfit for work, especially during the summer months, is a process. I find dressing for fall and winter a little simpler. With some creative layering and a few well-placed accessories, I can pretty much rock any look.
But, summer work wear is a bit trickier. For instance, I have to consider what kinds of meetings I’m in and with whom. Will I have to go offsite or stay inside? Will I be on my feet for most of the day or at my desk? And, when the weather isn’t cooperating, it makes planning even more important.
That’s why I spend a few extra minutes each weekend to think through my schedule and what outfits will get me through each day. I’ve put together this small gallery of some of my favorite looks. What do you think? If you have any favorite looks you like to rock at work, tell me about them in the comments below.
This shift dress I picked up at Nordstrom a few years back has become a must-have during the late spring and summer months when the heat and humidity in Florida make being outside for any length of time downright brutal.
This particular style of dress is cool and comfortable and the simple lines make glamming it up or toning it down an absolute breeze. And, with temps in the low 90s, I’ll take one any way I can get it!
I have a classic “pear” body type; smaller on the top and larger on the bottom and ironically, I’ve always avoided wearing these types of dresses because they just never looked quite right on me.
I’ve got “junk in the trunk,” and this style of dress was frustrating for me because it wasn’t very accommodating in the hip area. I thought curvy girls weren’t meant to wear dresses like this.
Then, I discovered the secret to getting a better fit: buy a size or two larger. The initial shot to my ego quickly dissipated when I saw how effortlessly the material fell into place. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s never to put too much stock into sizes. None are altogether true or absolute. What matters most is how you feel. What do you get when you combine a comfortable pair of jeans, a “haute” pair of shoes and a blazer you’ve had forever? One great look for Casual Friday! This lovely (now vintage) Hugo Buscati blazer is one of my favorites. It was one of the first real investments I ever made in my wardrobe. And, considering how well it’s held up all these years, it definitely turned out to be money well spent. Today, you can find super deals on Hugo Buscati pieces similar to this by shopping sites like eBay, Poshmark, Etsy and Tradesy.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Black goes with everything.” It’s still just as true today as it was years ago. After all, any fashionista worth her salt knows the first lesson in fashion is the color black. A quick peek at the SisterLadyGirl Instagram page will reveal that it’s a definite fave of mine.
I’ve recently made a pledge to get outside of my style box and have quickly discovered that I have a real affinity for leopard prints. Yes … leopard prints! Like the color black, leopard is considered a neutral. You can pair it with just about anything and come away with a surprisingly good result.
Here, I decided to keep things simple; using leopard print peep-toe heals and a lightweight summer scarf to counterbalance the brightness of the pants. I think a minimalist approach worked well here. What about you? Do you have a favorite way to wear leopard prints? Let me know in the comments.
Love U! It’s not just a declaration. It’s a call to action.
For me, there’s nothing more classic than black and white. But, make no mistake, black and white does not mean boring. It’s classic because no matter the combination, you’re likely to never go wrong.
If you’re anything like me, you’re starting to think about – or maybe even stress about – what you’re going to wear to your office holiday party.
Will it be heels or flats? Denim or gingham? Mini or maxi?
My questions are endless. But, the one thing I’m absolutely certain about is that these are the people I work with, so above all else, I want to remain appropriate.
This year, my coworkers decided to skip the typical potluck lunch and instead go on an after-hours pub stroll through one of the city’s most popular entertainment districts. The plan is to visit several different spots throughout the evening, sampling all kinds of tasty treats along the way. I know, it sounds like fun. But seriously, this complicates my decision-making process even more.
Will we be indoors or outdoors? Sunshine or rain? Jacket or sweater?
Yep. The questions just keep coming.
Anyway, I decided to put together what I think are a few professional, yet fashionable looks that should just about cover every possible scenario.
The problem is, I like them all! So, I need you to help me decide what to wear on a night that promises to be off the beaten path in more ways than one.
