To be clear, I’ve never lived through a pandemic. I don’t know anybody else who’s ever lived through a pandemic. Yet, there’s no shortage of people out here in these virtual streets trying to tell me (and everybody else) how to get through a pandemic!
This is our new normal, they say. But the irony is, this situation is completely and utterly abnormal!
Are we playing Russian roulette with the coronavirus every time we leave the house for supplies? Is my daughter at higher risk because she’s a heart patient? Should we be wary of the food we’re ordering from the local pub we’re trying to help stay afloat? So many questions. So few answers.
This is the stuff that anxiety attacks are made of. And here’s the ultimate “GOTCHA!”: The more stressed out we are, the more vulnerable we become to the virus because stress can inhibit our immune response.
Fortunately, there are lots of credible options available to help combat feelings of uncertainty that can lead to stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), coping with stress during an infectious disease outbreak is something we can all help each other do and maybe even come out stronger on the other side. Some suggestions the CDC has for helping us get through this include:
- Taking breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. This kind of bad news on repeat can put us into a pandemic panic.
- Making time to unwind and doing activities we enjoy.
- Connecting with others. Have you attended a Zoom Room Happy Hour yet? If not, I highly recommend it!
- Taking care of our bodies.
To help me unwind each night, I’ve been listening to Tmsoft’s White Noise Sleep Sounds. It’s an app that can be downloaded directly or you can find it on Spotify, YouTube and other listening apps. It’s a collection of hour-long sounds like raindrops dripping, wind blowing and fire crackling meant to soothe and calm the mind after a long day of dealing with our abnormal, new normal. Here are some of my favorites. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Let me know what you think in the comments!
