Both of my parents worked when I was young. That made me a latchkey kid. After school, I was expected to go straight home, grab a quick snack after putting my things away and get started on my homework before they came home. I wasn’t super appreciative of it back then, but I realize now that being home alone made me responsible and accountable for my own actions. My personal identity became rooted in self-sufficiency. I think that’s true for a lot of women in my generation. As young girls, we were forced to figure things out, but that shaped us into fiercely independent, resourceful and driven women. Every now and again, I have to remind myself how capable and strong I STILL am.
